Lyrical/Modern Dance is a style of dance which combines elements of ballet, modern, and jazz dance techniques. It is often choreographed set to popular music with lyrics. The choreography incorporates lyrics in the music with facial expression, movements, gestures and melodrama. It is very popular with teenage dancers due emotional inward focus and energetic elements of movement. It serves well as a vehicle for personal emotional expression through movement. Lyrical dance typically encourages use of articulation, line, weight, and movement qualities.
Modern dance is a dance form developed in the early 20th century. It is an interpretive dance style that centers on a dancer's own ideas instead of the traditional structured steps of ballet dancing. This came about when dancers began rebelling against the rigid rules of classical ballet for a more relaxed, free style of dancing. Many modern dance pioneers danced in bare feet and revealing costumes. The legendary Martha Graham along with other modern dance pioneers paved the way in the United States for American modern dance.
Modern dance encourages dancers to develop or invent new styles and steps as well as to use their emotions and moods to design routines.
Contemporary Dance incorporates all of the above with up to date - cutting edge choreography and movement, best displayed on the "So You Think You Can Dance" competitive dance TV show.
